sweet wines

A bottle of golden dessert wine makes a truly welcome Mother’s Day present. Yes, yes, we all want the piping-hot coffee, freshly squeezed juice etc for breakfast (in bed, mind).
But then we should simply look to teatime or dinner as a further moment to be pampered, I feel. A glass of cool, sweet wine, handed out to accompany one of Diana Henry’s elegant apple pies, is sure to be treasured.
Some wines have inherently sweet, appley flavours. Try the crisp, light, delicate dessert wines of Germany, or the baked-apple-and-walnut nuances of sweet chenin blanc, which usually hails from the Loire in France. Slightly lighter demi-sec vouvray – also a Loire Valley chenin – can be a delight.
This off-dry, rather than fully luscious, style works best with the subtle spices, seeds and nuts of Diana’s Friulian pie. You could choose a dessert riesling or weissburgunder for the apple and raspberry pie, as the floral hint of this grape is lovely with the elderflower, or even splash out on a sweeter style of champagne, all orchard fruit, citrus and creamy froth…
For the Florentine pie, there’s Italy’s own nutty vin santo, or 'holy wine’. Alternatively, strike out with a more modern dessert wine, such as New World sweet semillon. This will deliver a richer and riper note to take on the citrus fruit, honey and marmalade of this recipe. Don’t forget to chill lightly.
This applies to both wine and mother, of course.
