Food and wine enthusiasts have a major event on the horizon that will offer many chances to meet renowned chefs, talk to influential winemakers and enjoy some of the finest meals imaginable – including one prepared by a Sacramento chef, Kelly McCown of Ella Dining Room & Bar.
Beginning with a reception Thursday night and running through Sunday, attendees of Pebble Beach Food & Wine will be able to sit in on cooking demonstrations, wine tastings, a hands-on winemaking and blending tutorial, and an interactive lunch with celebrity chef Guy Fieri.
Thomas Keller, Tom Colicchio, Daniel Boulud, Roland Passot, Jacques Pepi n –those and many more will be on hand at what is being billed as the West Coast's premiere culinary event. There will also be a lighthearted event called "Grilled Cheese and Great Wines."
Complete packages that include lodging range from $995 to $4,750, or pick events to attend à la carte (many cost $100 each). The event takes place at five locations in and around Pebble Beach.
McCown will showcase his food at the grand tasting Sunday, which costs $195. According to the website, "25 celebrity chefs will showcase their culinary skills and provide delicious and decadent tasting samples of their cuisine."
McCown's dish will feature Kusshi oysters and Sterling caviar, though the scale will be significantly different than on a typical busy evening at his restaurant downtown – he's preparing enough for 1,500. The chef says attending the event is not only an honor but an opportunity to encourage other Sacramento chefs to get involved. The city's food scene, he says, is on the rise. McCown also says Pebble Beach Food & Wine is an unusually engaging experience for the general public.
"There are so many great wineries and so many great chefs, you can walk up and talk to the winemakers, the proprietors of the winery, and you can walk up and talk to the chefs you read about. There are really no barriers," he said.
